Blessed Archbishop Eduard Profittlich

Eduard Profittlich was the Archbishop and martyr of the Estonian Catholic Church, who is especially significant for our entire country as Estonia’s first blessed. He dedicated his life entirely to Estonia, coming here as a missionary, learning the language, and faithfully serving his people as a church leader.

During World War II, he decided to stay with his congregation and died in Soviet captivity in 1942. His life is a testament to faith and self-sacrifice, and in 2025, he was declared Estonia’s first blessed.

Who is Blessed Eduard Profittlich?

Eduard Profittlich was born in 1890 in Birresdorf, Germany. He was ordained a priest in 1922 and was sent to Tallinn in December 1930 to work as a missionary priest and build up the local Catholic community. Just a few months later, Pope Pius XI appointed him Apostolic Administrator of Estonia, and in 1936, he was consecrated as an archbishop in the Peter and Paul Church in Tallinn.

In January 1941, the second resettlement of Germans (Umsiedlung) took place in Estonia. The German embassy strongly advised Profittlich, as a German, to leave Estonia, as the Soviet regime was anti-religious and his life could be in danger.
Guided by the principle ‘where the flock is, there too is the chief shepherd,’ he made the decision in 1941 to remain in Estonia, after which he was arrested and taken to Kirov prison in Russia. Archbishop Eduard Profittlich died due to the harsh prison conditions in Soviet Russia on February 22, 1942, in Kirov prison.

Today, Eduard Profittlich is Estonia’s first blessed martyr. On September 6, 2025, Archbishop Eduard Profittlich, shepherd and martyr of our church, was beatified in Freedom Square in Tallinn, and can now bear the title of blessed.

Biography of Eduard Profittlich

The biography of Blessed Eduard Profittlich is a testament to unwavering faith and heroic fidelity, which culminated in a conscious decision to stay with his flock even under the conditions of Soviet occupation and repression.

1890–1922
Birth, Upbringing, and Becoming a Priest

Eduard Profittlich was born in 1890 in Birresdorf, Germany, into a devout and caring Catholic family, where his deep religious worldview was formed. His spiritual vocation led him to priestly studies, and in 1922, he was ordained a priest in Valkenburg, marking the beginning of his life's work in the service of God and the Church.

1930–1936
Mission in Estonia and Rebuilding the Church

In 1930, Profittlich was sent to Estonia as a Jesuit, where he began working at the St. Peter and Paul Church in Tallinn. The very next year, Pope Pius XI appointed him Apostolic Administrator, entrusting him with responsibility for the entire Catholic Church in Estonia. He quickly learned Estonian, acquired Estonian citizenship, and fully dedicated himself to developing the local Church. In 1936, he was solemnly consecrated a bishop, which was a historic event in the entire ecclesiastical life of Estonia.

1941–1942
Fidelity to his People and Martyrdom

Amidst the turmoil of World War II, Profittlich faced a difficult choice but chose to remain in Estonia with his congregation, despite the danger. In 1941, Soviet authorities arrested him and he was taken to Kirov prison in Russia. There he was sentenced to death, but before the sentence could be carried out, he died in 1942 under severe prison conditions, remaining faithful to his faith and vocation until the end.

2002–2025
Beatification

Profittlich's life and martyrdom began to be ecclesiastically investigated in the beatification process initiated in 2002. After decades of thorough investigation, Pope Francis recognized his holiness and sacrifice, granting permission for his beatification. In 2025, Eduard Profittlich was solemnly beatified in Tallinn, confirming his life as an example of faith, love, and fidelity for the entire Church.

Beatification

On September 6, 2025, a new and joyful chapter opened in the history of the Estonian land and Church, when Archbishop Eduard Profittlich was beatified in Tallinn’s Freedom Square. This event was a great gift not only to Estonian Catholics but to all our people, confirming that even the small Estonian Church has a faithful witness to give to the whole world. In preparation, the names of more than 23,000 victims of Soviet repressions, including Archbishop Profittlich, were read aloud for 24 hours in the Dominican monastery in Tallinn, and on the day of the beatification, thousands of attendees felt as “one soul and one heart”.
The solemn beatification Mass was celebrated by the Papal Representative, Cardinal Christoph Schönborn of Vienna, in the same place where Pope Francis celebrated Mass in 2018. It was during this visit that the Pope uttered the prophetic words “Santo Subito” (may he be made a saint immediately) about Archbishop Profittlich. According to the papal decree, Eduard Profittlich can now bear the title of ‘Blessed’, and his memorial day is celebrated annually on February 21.
